Lynyrd Skynyrd Map Out New Album with Marilyn Manson Guitarist
Last year, when the modern incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd announced its songwriting partnership with former Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5, some longtime fans of the Southern rock group were naturally skeptical. But Skynyrd lead guitarist Rickey Medlocke recently told Billboard that things have gone so well with John 5 – who is now guitarist for Rob Zombie – that the band is almost done writing its new album. The group reportedly has plans to hit the studio this fall in anticipation of an early 2009 release date. “We’ve been doing quite a bit of writing with John 5,” said Medlocke. “Everybody thought, ‘My god, you are going to write with this guy? How is that ever going to work?’ But this guy came in and is really multitalented in all genres. “I was surprised that this guy could sit down and play Glen Campbell and Roy Clark better than they do, and it blew my mind. And then he loves Southern rock, the blues and country. It really blew us away.” Lynyrd Skynyrd are on tour through September with Kid Rock on the Rock and Rebel tour. ¯Ellen Mallernee
