About Bron Buick
Born 1958 in London at a very early age of Polish parents who loved music - any and all music. Thanks to Mum's radio I had a great love of rock'n'roll and then developed a fascination for the blues that wouldn't go away. Always sang for as long as I can remember - it brought me great joy even if it didn't to anyone else! Then Granma bought the piano - so I studied classical music from about the age of 5 - but the devil's music kept a callin' - until at the age of fourteen I was writing poetry and songs - and I discovered drums.
Spent the next 17 odd years touring the world as a drummer with various bands including Flying Saucers (with Sandy Ford & Pete Pritchard),Count Bishops (with Johnny Guitar), Redhouse Blues Band, Stateline, Trux (with Eddie Allen & Roger Newell), Tilt (with Gordon Russell & Andy Heart), Gunslingers, Kix, Skat, and the now legendary Chuck Farley (featuring Steve Simpson,Geoff Whitehorn,Polli Palmer & the late Boz Burrell). Also jammed with the likes of Paddy Goes To Holyhead with Mal McNulty and Bernie Shaw sharing mics, Glitterband, some of the Ramones, Johnny Thunders, Quireboys to name but a few. It was an amazing time where I got to play at some of the legendary venues and to meet and work with amazing people and some of my heroes.
It is due to the diverse mix of bands that I have worked with that my songwriting covers so many musical sins and breaks a few rules along the way.
During the lean times of trying to survive as a musician I worked for a while as the Drum Doctor at Londons' ProPercussion, wrote articles and reviews for music press such as Melody Maker, NME, International Musician, Music UK and others. By this time, apart from having had numerous radio sessions and TV appearances - I was now the veteran of about 2500 gigs (and yes I did say 2500) - performing at every level from pubs and clubs to major tours and festivals.
Eventually after a health scare and much soul searching I hung up my sticks and walked away. Being by the sea brought fresh inspiration and when the head of my mistress popped up again the temptation was just too great. so I moved back to London in 1996 and teamed up with my old friend and guitarist Steve Yelland to form Back to Back and then Flashbacks - but this time I was fronting the band as a vocalist and guitarist. It all made sense as I'd always had guitars lying around and I'd been singing forever - what more excuse did I need. Eternally grateful to Steve for getting me playing again!!
Got involved in some TV extras work and voiceovers for major ad campaigns and was approached by my good friend and guitarist Chris Hill and harp blower extraordinaire John'Reckless Reg' McGuinness to form a good time blues band - so with the additional talents of former Taste, Family and Spencer Davis bassist - the legendary Charlie McCracken and Paul Atkinson (Etta James, GB Blues Band, Houserockers, Mickey Jupp) on drums - we formed Smokin' Blues. When John moved over to Ireland we decided to carry on and ultimately we became The Buick Hill Band, a hard drivin' rockin' blues band with more than a hint of rock'n'roll on the side. Sadly this band will be gigging very rarely now due to my musical and personal commitments in the U.S.of A.
As for the solo project - it seemed a terrible waste to have all that material lying around and not have anything concrete to leave behind - so with the love, support and encouragement of family and friends - the EP 'Just A Thought...' was recorded.
In July'08 I had the great privilege of being at The Vault Studios in Houston, Texas to record some songs with Michael 'The Mudcat' Reames and New Orleans legend Wayne Folse - some of mine and my interpretations of some of theirs! And with the mighty Dave Williams (Hall & Oates, O'Jays...) producing we eagerly await the results!! They were all an absolute joy to work with and spend time in the company of and we look forward to future collaborations both as writers and performers. All being well - and with the help of these guys I hope to finish recording my new album entitled 'Battered and Bluesed' later this year. TAKE NOTE RECORD COMPANIES AND/OR PUBLISHERS!!!
So there you have it.....me - yet another thousand gigs under my belt and still married to my music as I believe I always will be - just as the blues will always be my mistress. And after my recent scares I just relish every day that I have the chance to wake up and do it all again!! To be continued.......
On his myspace page, "Bron Buick" has posted six amazing songs, "Love Sickness" "Mississippi Belle" "Loving Lucy" "Fast As You" "Heaven" and "So Right" go and give yourself a treat, and go on over and give these songs a listen,
